Three hours lecture. Three credit hours.

Was MCOM 4370. Provides a critical examination of hip-hop in the US and its role as a communicative, linguistic, cultural, political, and artistic resource and commodity. The course identifies and examines the foundations of hip-hop culture and rap music. Through readings, documentaries, discographies, and projects, students will develop an understanding of the conceptual fundamentals of hip-hop philosophy and the community from which it originated. Focus will be given to the implications of that background, music, style, and its impact on the nation and the globe.  Dual listed in the Graduate Catalog as MCOM 57043 (was MCOM 5370).
