This course surveys the law governing commercial shipping activities on the world’s oceans and the navigable waters of the United States. It evaluates the basic structure of the shipping industry and examines substantive maritime law topics including the carriage of goods by sea and inland rivers, collision, salvage, and marine insurance. Maritime safety and security regulation is also discussed, including navigation and environmental challenges, as well as the commercial implications of piracy, contraband smuggling, search and rescue, and other contemporary issues.
