GEOG 52543 - (was 5325) Map Design & Web Mapping

3 credit hours.

Was GEOG 5325. This course introduces the map as a complex and interdisciplinary infographic. Students are taught the art and science of map design, i.e. cartography. Sub-topics include principles of infographic design, map anatomy, layout, color theory, and typography. The role of maps as story-telling device are emphasized and both print and web-based map output are produced. Students gain hands on experience in the production of maps using GIS platforms (ArcGIS Desktop, QGIS), web mapping tools (Tableau, Google Sites, ESRI Story Maps, Google My Maps), and graphic design software (Adobe Illustrator). Course is fully online. 

Prerequisites: Prerequisites: GEOG/ERSC 42144 or consent of instructor
