ERSC 4421 - GIS I Three hours lecture. Two hours laboratory per week. Four credit hours.
Introduces Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the use of spatial data for problem-solving in science. Lectures are prepared as online technical screencasts and geospatial concept explanations. The creation, acquisition, management, display, exploration, analysis, and display of spatial data is described via the use of practical skill-building exercises. Class meetings utilize a project-based methodology that incorporates applications from geography, geology, biology, environmental science, and the social sciences to foster basic to intermediate-level GIS software proficiency. ArcGIS Desktop is the primary platform used although other applications will be introduced. Students produce a portfolio of their work. Prerequisites: GEOG 3333 or consent of instructor.
