GEOL 52104 - (was ERSC 5421) GIS I


Three hours lecture. Two hours laboratory per week. Four credit hours.

Was ERSC 5421. Introduces Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the use of spatial data for problem-solving in science. Lectures are prepared as online technical screencasts and geospatial concept explanations. The creation, acquisition, management, display, exploration, and analysis, and display of spatial data are described via the use of practical skill-building exercises. Class meetings utilized a project-based methodology that incorporates applications from geography, geology, biology, environmental science, and the social sciences to foster basic to intermediate-level GIS software proficiency. ArcGIS Desktop is the primary platform used, although other applications will be introduced. Students produce a portfolio of their work. Dual listed in the Undergraduate Catalog as GEOL 42104 (was ERSC 4421). Cross listed as GEOG 52144 (was 5421).

Prerequisites: GEOG 33343 (was GEOG 3333) or instructor consent.
