Where to Go
The Trojan Academic Advising and Support Center (TAASC) provides an academically focused, student-centered, supportive, and structured advising environment for UA Little Rock’s entering students. TAASC is available year-round to ensure students’ successful transition to UA Little Rock. We provide intentional and personalized academic advising services for students undecided about their major and students in all majors (except Nursing; Communication Sciences and Disorders; Middle Childhood Education; Elementary Education; Special Education; K-12 Health and Physical Education Social Work; and Interpretation: American Sign Language /English) up to 45 credit hours. Our services help students in the exploration of self, major, and career. Services are available to any student at any point in their academic journey.
Some student situations may require additional TAASC Discovery Advisor assistance and therefore a continuation of advising in TAASC. Most incoming students will receive advising according to one of the following journeys:
New Freshman Journey: All incoming freshman will first be advised during New Student Summer Orientation. These students will then be required to meet with a TAASC Discovery Advisor two times in the fall to be further acclimated and orientated to UA Little Rock; to complete and review self and career assessments, and to be academically advised. Throughout both appointments, New Freshman will be introduced and referred to the academic support services provided by student’s declared major department and other special support services. During two appointments in the spring, New Freshman will continue an exploration of self and career with intent to confirm major declaration; be advised for the upcoming fall semester, and be referred to student’s declared major department for future advising.
New Transfer Journey: TAASC Discovery Advisors will contact all incoming transfer students (except those majoring in Nursing; Communication Sciences and Disorders; Middle Childhood Education; Elementary Education; Special Education; K-12 Health and Physical Education Social Work; and Interpretation: American Sign Language /English) to further orient and acclimate them to UA Little Rock, to review credentials, and if needed, refer to declared major department. Transfer Students with fewer than 45 credit hours will remain with TAASC and complete the New Freshmen journey until approximately 45 hours are completed.
TAASC advising and academic support services are grounded in academic advising theory and best practices. The TAASC mission is simple: We
- Teach (Educate about Campus Resources, Policies, and Class Registration); we
- Guide (Model Professionalism and Facilitate Self, Major, and Career Exploration); and we
- Empower (Support, Encourage, Motivate, and Inspire students towards continuous matriculation and academic success).
The TAASC implements the mission daily to ensure students’ seamless orientation and acclimation to UA Little Rock; to guide students in the exploration of self, major, and career towards major declaration; and to encourage student ownership of academic, career, and personal goals. TAASC also hopes to build students’ awareness of career readiness competencies towards future employability; to empower students to use all campus resources and to navigate university opportunities, and to instill Trojan loyalty through a positive and memorable first year at UA Little Rock.
In addition to academic advising, TAASC administers the First Year Experience course (PEAW 1300), coordinates the Student Success Workshop Series held during the fall and spring semesters and administers the Associate of Arts in General Studies degree.
What to Expect
All degree-seeking undergraduate students are required to be academically advised each semester prior to registering for classes. Regular contact with an academic advisor is a key to student success.
New freshmen are advised for fall classes during summer orientation by professional advisors in one of two offices and continue to be advised in these offices until they earn approximately 45 credit hours.
- Freshmen with majors in Nursing; Communication Sciences and Disorders; Middle Childhood Education; Elementary Education; Special Education; K-12 Health and Physical Education; Social Work; and Interpretation: ASL/English are advised in the Advising and Support Center of the College of Education and Health Professions.
- Freshmen in all other majors and undecided students are advised in the Trojan Academic Advising and Support Center.
These two offices are also the first points of contact for new transfer student advising. Depending on individual circumstances, transfer students may remain in these offices for advising or be referred to academic college centers or academic departments.

Choosing a Major
In declaring a major, a student decides on a particular area of study. This decision makes a student’s academic goals more specific and maximizes chances of graduating in four years, without unneeded courses and extra expenses. How to declare a major for the first time, change a major, or explore a particular major in more detail:
- Students who have never declared a major and all students who started at UA Little Rock Summer/Fall 2018 or later should make an appointment with a Discovery Advisor in the Trojan Academic Advising and Support Center in the Student Services Center Building, room 320, (501) 569-3386.
- Students who started at UA Little Rock before Summer/Fall 2018 and have already declared a major but want to change majors should make an appointment with an advisor in the department that offers the desired major. The major advisor will also help in the selection of a minor if one is required or desired. To identify your major advisor, visit the “Who Is My Advisor” webpage ualr.edu/advising/who-is-my-advisor and click “Continuing” as your student status.
- Students who are currently undecided on a major should explore their options with a Discovery Advisor in the Trojan Academic Advising and Support Center in the Student Services Center Building, room 320, (501) 569-3386.
