The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology (AUSP) is a consortium program between the College of Education and Health Professions (CEHP) at UA Little Rock and the College of Health Professions (CHP) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The Department offers four degrees (i.e., B.S., M.S., Au.D., Ph.D.) and a post-baccalaureate course sequence for students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in another field and are interested in pursuing a career in Speech-Language Pathology.
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) and the post-baccalaureate course sequence are offered through the CEHP at UA Little Rock. Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in another major may earn a minor in CSD; the minor requires a minimum of 18 hours of CSD coursework, beginning with AUSP 2360 , AUSP 3350 , AUSP 3360 and AUSP 3361 .
The undergraduate degree provides the ‘pre-professional’ coursework needed to pursue graduate education in speech-language pathology. The B.S. in CSD is viewed as ‘pre-professional’, because an M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders is required to practice as a speech-language pathologist, and an Au.D., Doctor of Audiology, is required to practice as an audiologist.
Students interested in enrolling in the B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders or the Post-baccalaureate course sequence (for Speech-Language Pathologists) are encouraged to contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator. Post-baccalaureate students interested in becoming an audiologist should contact the AuD. Admissions Chair and explore the UAMS website at healthprofessions.uams.edu/programs/audandspeechpathology
General Information and Program Requirements
B.S. and Post-Baccalaureate Course Sequence
Students interested in enrolling in the B.S. degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or the Post-baccalaureate course sequence (for Speech-Language Pathologists) are encouraged to contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator. In order to be admitted to the B.S. degree program, individuals must first have earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 (includes all college coursework taken). Major coursework begins at the Junior level (fall semester) and includes four semesters of CSD courses. Students may pursue the coursework full or part-time; there are no online courses available and no courses are offered during the summer months.
Major coursework includes 39 hours of didactic courses (13 classes) and 2 hours of clinical practicum in our Campus Speech and Hearing Clinic. Seniors must have earned a minimum 3.00 GPA in major courses and maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 to enroll in clinical practicum. Only grades of C or greater are accepted in AUSP courses to fulfill requirements for the major. Students are allowed only two attempts to earn a grade of C or greater in the following 4 courses: AUSP 3350 , AUSP 3360 , AUSP 3361 and AUSP 3364 . Students unable to earn grades of at least a C in these four courses, after two enrollments, will be dropped from the major.
There is no minimum GPA required to enroll in the post-baccalaureate course sequence or the minor in speech pathology, but interested individuals must first meet with the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, as enrollment in major coursework in CSD is restricted to major, minor and post-baccalaureate students. The post-baccalaureate course sequence requires 30 hours (10 courses); AUSP 3350 , AUSP 3360 , AUSP 3361 , AUSP 3364 , AUSP 4368 , AUSP 3363 , AUSP 3365 , AUSP 4364 , 4266. Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in another major may earn a minor in CSD; the minor requires a minimum of 18 hours of CSD coursework, beginning with AUSP 2360 , AUSP 3350 , AUSP 3360 and AUSP 3361 .
Transfer students must complete a minimum of 15 hours of CSD coursework at UA Little Rock to earn a B.S. degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders through UA Little Rock. Transfer students should set an appointment in the CEHP Advising and Support Center, prior to meeting with the AUSP Undergraduate Program Coordinator.
Graduate Programs
Two graduate degrees and the graduate certificate are offered through the CHP at UAMS; these include the M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders, the Au.D. Doctor of Audiology, and the graduate certificate in Auditory Based Intervention (ABI). The M.S. and Au.D. are accredited by the Council for on Academic Accreditation (CAA). All courses offered through the UA Little Rock and UAMS consortium program are offered on the UA Little Rock campus. The link to the graduate programs and the graduate certificate is healthprofessions.uams.edu/programs/audandspeechpathology/. A Ph.D. degree program in Communication Sciences and Disorders is offered through an expanded consortium between UA Little Rock, UAMS and the University of Central Arkansas; this degree program is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Individuals interested in the Ph.D. degree program are referred to: healthprofessions.uams.edu/programs/audandspeechpathology/doctor-of-philosophy-communication-sciences-and-disorders/.
