ELED 30133 - (was ELEM 3301) Teaching Structured Literacy

Three credit hours.

Was ELEM 3301. This course prepares pre-service teachers to understand and implement Structured Literacy by mastering both the “what” (essential content of literacy instruction) and “how” (evidence-based instructional methods) of effective, research-backed literacy teaching. Major components of Structured Literacy in language and literacy are: phonology, phonics, syllables, morphology, etymology, syntax, text reading fluency, semantics/comprehension, and handwriting. Structured Literacy’s core instructional principles are: explicit and direct teaching, systematic, sequential, and cumulative instruction. Pre-service teachers will define, describe, and connect each component to the processes of reading and writing and apply their learning through the core principles of Structured Literacy. Must be taken concurrently with Field Experience II.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Elementary Education Program, ELED 20103 - (was ELEM 2301) Children’s Literature, and ELED 20303 - (was ELEM 2303) Emergent Literacy.
Corequisites: ELED 30002 - (was ELEM 3200) Field Experience II.
